“Without laboratories men of science are soldiers without arm” as rightfully said by Louis Pasteur. Thus the Department of pathology has always been the pillar of strength and backbone of our institute. Pathology is a part of the central laboratory which is fully functioning and has been handling samples in hematology, clinical pathology, cytopathology, and histopathology. It has been working 24×7 in the ongoing Covid pandemic by doing hematological tests and Covid markers which were helpful in determining the severity of the patients. Proper protocol was followed in the laboratory for running the sample and processing them. All the technicians were trained for sample collection of Covid patients and they were going twice morning and night for sample collection. The hematology samples were run in an automated five-part hematology analyzer and then slides were made and were screened at two different levels and findings were given after screening every slide.
The reports were released only after comparing with the previous results for better diagnosis. Histopathology has been a pillar for diagnosing cases and even helping in identifying post-Covid fungal infections. Special stains are done for a better diagnosis like Periodic acid Schiff stain. Cytopathology has always been useful in screening and diagnosing benign and malignant cytology. FNAC, scrape cytology, Pap smear and body fluid cytology all are done and stained, and reported on the same day so that patient treatment can be decided early. Clinical Pathology includes all body fluid routine examination, urine, and semen routine examination. All the urine samples are collected and a urine analyzer has been installed for better results of urine as compared to manual methods and for further confirmation, slides were screened by pathologists. The semen examination is done in four steps and is screened by both pathologists. Quality control is a very important part of our lab. We run internal control every morning and we even send samples to different labs to compare our readings. For external quality assurance, we have tied up with Ram Manohar Lohia hospital Lucknow and Aiims New Delhi.
The department is consistent to provide timely and accurate reports to its patients and clinicians thus helping them to move forward with their treatment. Our second pillar in our department is our blood bank which provides its services round the clock and has held blood donation camps on 14th June (world blood donor day) and 15th June. The blood bank has been sending its timely reports to the National Aids Control Organization (NACO) and the Hospital Blood transfusion committee. All the tests are done in-house and we are trying to get better every day.

Our third pillar is our college department which has been set up with equipment for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. There are 80 mounted specimens and 50 wet specimens for undergraduate teaching. There is a decahead for postgraduate teaching in the college research room and a Penta head in the hospital research room. Thus our whole department has been working along with other various clinical Departments in the hospital. It helps in correlating the cases and provides a better diagnosis for the patients.
